About the Scan
Ultrasound has been in use for over 25 years and is recognized by medical professionals as a safe and beneficial tool that can be used during pregnancy. High frequency sound waves are produced by the ultrasound machine and sent into the body through a transducer that is either placed on the abdomen or inserted into the vagina (transvaginal). A transvaginal approach may provide greater resolution in early pregnancy. Echos are then received back and electronically translated into dots (white to black) on a monitor producing a picture.
The ultrasound scan is done to determine if the pregnancy is in the womb (intrauterine) and viable (heartbeat present). Gestational age and estimated due dates may also be determined by obtaining specific measurements of the baby.
